Introduction: Managing Cervical Health Proactively
Many cervical conditions, while not cancerous, require precise clinical intervention to prevent future risks. Procedures like LLETZ (Large Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone), Cervical Cautery, and Polypectomy are vital tools in my practice to ensure your cervical health is maintained.
Understanding the Procedures: Clear Definitions
- LLETZ: A specialized procedure where a thin, electrified wire loop is used to remove a small layer of tissue from the cervix. This is typically done if a pap smear shows abnormal cells (dysplasia).
- Cervical Cautery: The use of heat to seal abnormal tissue or stop persistent bleeding from the cervix. It is often used for "Cervical Ectropion" (where the delicate inner lining of the cervix grows on the outside).
- Cervical Polypectomy: A simple, often painless procedure to remove small, fleshy growths called polyps from the cervix.
Recovery Expectations
Most of these procedures are performed in the clinic or as same-day surgery. You may experience mild cramping or "watery" discharge for 1-2 weeks. It is important to avoid using tampons or having intimacy for 4 weeks to allow the cervix to heal fully.
Red Flags After Cervical Work
- Bleeding that is heavier than your usual period.
- Severe abdominal pain.
- Persistent fever.
