About This Department

Respiratory & Chest in Dehradun

The Respiratory and Chest Medicine Department at MS Galaxy Hospital, Dehradun is led by Dr. Shubhanu Tayal (MBBS, MD Respiratory Medicine), providing expert management of all lung and breathing disorders — from asthma and COPD to interstitial lung disease and complex chest infections.

We offer in-house Spirometry and Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) for objective lung assessment, in addition to bronchoscopy for diagnosis of complex lung conditions. Our respiratory team works closely with our ICU for patients requiring ventilator support.

Conditions & Treatments We Offer

Asthma
Reversible airway narrowing causing episodic breathlessness, wheezing, chest tightness and cough — particularly at night or early morning. Diagnosed by spirometry and treated with inhalers.
COPD
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease — irreversible airflow obstruction caused predominantly by smoking. Managed with bronchodilator inhalers, pulmonary rehabilitation and oxygen if needed.
Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)
A group of conditions causing progressive scarring (fibrosis) of the lung — causing breathlessness and dry cough. Diagnosed by HRCT and managed with antifibrotic drugs.
Pneumonia
Bacterial, viral or fungal infection of the lung parenchyma — presenting with fever, cough, breathlessness and chest pain. Treated with targeted antibiotics.
Tuberculosis (TB)
One of the most common infectious diseases in India. Diagnosed by sputum examination, CBNAAT and chest X-Ray. Treated with the standard 6-month DOTS regimen.
Pleural Effusion
Fluid collection around the lung — causing breathlessness. Drained by pleurocentesis or chest tube. Underlying cause (infection, cancer, heart failure) treated.
Pulmonary Embolism
Blood clot in the lung arteries — causing sudden breathlessness, chest pain and coughing blood. Medical emergency — diagnosed by CT pulmonary angiography and treated with anticoagulation.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between asthma and COPD?
Asthma typically begins in childhood or early adulthood, is caused by allergy or triggers, and is reversible with inhalers. COPD typically begins after age 40 in smokers, causes progressive irreversible airflow obstruction and cannot be fully reversed.
Is spirometry test painful?
No. Spirometry involves breathing forcefully into a mouthpiece attached to the spirometer. It takes 15 minutes and requires no needles or injections.
Can TB be cured?
Yes. Tuberculosis is curable with the complete 6-month DOTS regimen. It is essential to complete the full course — stopping treatment early leads to drug-resistant TB.
How do I know if my breathlessness is from the heart or lungs?
Both heart and lung conditions can cause breathlessness. An ECG, Echocardiography and Spirometry together usually distinguish the cause. Sometimes both are contributing. Dr. Shubhanu Tayal works with our DM Cardiologist for combined cardiac-respiratory assessment.
